Si bien, este evento surgió en el 2013 de la mano de Spike Video Game Awards, conocidos hoy en día como VGX y distribuido por Spike TV, la primera entrega por parte de Geoff Keighley, tuvo lugar en el 2014, por lo que, tras 8 años ha habido grandes eventos que han dejado premios a los siguientes juegos nominados a GOTY:
